Crack and clang: Mercedes-AMG 45 siblings unwrapped

“With their new compact sports models, Mercedes-AMG is demonstrating its high competence in development once again.”

Mercedes-AMG has introduced new additions to their compact class sports cars, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 and CLA 45 in AMG and AMG S guise. AMG says the batch continues the success story of its predecessors and reasserts their leading positions on the segment. Both cars are powered by a 2.0-litre engine with two output variants aimed at Audi’s RS3 and the imminent BMW 1 series.

From outside, both the Mercedes-AMG A 45 and CLA 45 now feature the AMG specific radiator grille with a lower and wider contour and twelve louvres. Borrowing Mark Fetherson’s design seen on the AMG GT, the 45’s have a sharp and pronounced shark nose with deeply contoured headlamps.

Individual distinct details are seen on the jet wing design front apron of the A 45 AMG with horizontal fins on outer air inlets while the CLA 45 AMG has an even more expressive appearance with its jet-like external air inlets, showing its close family relationship with the AMG GT 4-door Coupé. Alongside both the AMGs are wider side skirts which create with silver chrome inserts when specified through the Silver Chrome package and in gloss black with the Night Package.

As standard, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 and CLA 45 ride on 18-inch wheels in 10 spoke design painted in tantalum grey hugged by 245/40 rubbers. S models are equipped with 19-inch in 5 twin-spoke design also in tantalum grey shod in size 245/35 and 255/35 tyres. In the basic models, the AMG high-performance braking system features grey-painted brake callipers with white AMG lettering. The S-versions are recognisable by their larger, red-painted 6-piston brake callipers with black AMG lettering. The rear is characterised by two round twin tailpipes which exude crack and clang notes. On S models, the tailpipes are larger with internal fluting and AMG lettering.

Inside the Mercedes-AMG, A 45 and CLA 45 are sporty appointments that continue the exterior athletic ambience. Similar to its siblings, both the 45s feature the MBUX infotainment. Both the driver and front passenger seats are contoured and offer lateral support. Standard upholstery as a combination of black ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfibre is timeless and creates typical AMG highlights with double topstitching in red. The colour scheme is echoed by the red designo seat belts and the dashboard support trim in black DINAMICA microfibre with a red border.
